I\'m talking about the Keep Wisconsin Warm Fund (KWWF), an independent, statewide organization dedicated to helping those in need with their energy requirements.

I\'m not sure it matters much what they look like originally -- some have been downright weird, others stunning. But usage soon gives them the beauty of familiarity.Trouble is, whenever I\'ve had a cup in the office that I\'m particularly fond of, I either break it or it disappears. I finally realized on a trip to Florida some time back that what I really needed was an Ugly Cup. This gaudy mess, with my name printed in large (ugly) capital letters on the back and covered with alligators, beaches, palms and space shuttles seemed just the thing. For years it served its purpose -- the name successfully warded off poltergeists, and if that wasn\'t enough, there was the sheer ugliness as an added deterrent. And, hey -- if it broke, I could just throw away the pieces. I never lost it and drank my coffee out of it every day for eight years (I enjoyed the large capacity, too). But I\'m only human. One day I dropped it, putting into play the other function of an Ugly Cup -- in the event of inadvertent destruction, I could just sweep up the pieces and gladly be rid of this embarrassment. But with the tenacious survival instincts of a true Ugly Cup it refused to die. The handle snapped off neatly and the cup was otherwise unharmed. It would be wantonly callous to toss out such a hardy survivor.That\'s why I now have an Ugly Pen Holder on my desk. (As for my new cup, it isn\'t ugly --just blah. A black cup with a little logo on it from the kitchen cabinet. Attachments to things are just too difficult.)

Driving into the light and into the sky

The bad news is that I drive east when I go to work -- which can be blinding on a sunny morning when the sun is low on the horizon (ditto in reverse on the way home). Chuck Kamp wrote:
Over the past month, Metro staff has worked on responses to several issues raised resulting from the decision made at the December Transit and Parking Commission (TPC) not to approve the proposed fare increase. This memo attempts to address the fact that our 2009 approved budget now carries a $762,000 deficit given the current fare structure.

Album: Fragments
After five years of performing many darkly sensuous live performances around the Midwest but only forging one self-released demo during that time, Sensuous Enemy have finally inked a deal with Madison record label Sonic Mainline and released a professionally produced CD entitled Fragments. It has been seen on some of the best-of-the-year lists in the local media (most notably The Isthmus) and there are good reasons for that.
Though Sensuous Enemy has had a revolving door membership, the one constant throughout the iconoclastic band\'s existence has been singer Jai. Her style has been rightfully compared to Annie Lennox (and the band sometimes covers the Eurithmics\' \"Missionary Man\" at their live shows) and it is her tremendous vocal range (which she attended college classes to hone) that makes the band difficult to compare to any other dark electronic act out there.

We have a collection going back to summer 1955. Every year I like to take a look at the top ten top ten hits of the previous year, which I felt compelled to share here at Dane101. Note that one song (#3) may in fact be a top ten song of next year because it hasn\'t necessarily finished climbing the chart yet. So that\'s why there are eleven songs, in case it advances and become a top ten of 2009 instead.

Yep, finally. We\'ve been bugging him to start blogging since April of 2005 (well, we stopped when we realized it was fruitless endeavor), but we are happy to see he has put at the least the lower half of his torso into the blogging waters.
...and how is his first go at The Blogging? Not bad. He is personable, witty, and provides the information I would go to a Mayoral blog to seek out. Those are all good traits for a blogging newbie. Someone does need to teach him how to properly link (specifically his wish list to the U.S. Conference of Mayors in paragraph nine). Today is only Day One for the Mayor\'s blog, so we will wait until he gets his head below the water before we get too critical. Until then, welcome to the Madison blogosphere Mayor Dave Cieslewicz. We look forward to including you in Breakfast Links. You can read the Mayor\'s blog here.

Mallards release 2009 schedule

Sure it\'s the middle of winter, but what better time to think baseball?
The Madison Mallards released their 2009 schedule today. Their season kicks of on May 28, when the Mallards travel to Alexandria and face the Beetles.
Mallards General Manager Vern Stenman likes the idea of opening on the road, and has asked the league for the opportunity the past couple of years.
?There\'s some value to that,? says Stenman. ?It gives the players a chance to get to know each other.? Stenman points out that players are coming from colleges across the country and have little time together before the start of the season.

Website: http://www.myspace.com/icarushimself
I will admit that I have missed out on a few albums since I started writing for D101 and while I can forgive myself for most of them it?s hard not to kick myself for not hearing Icarus Himself until a couple weeks ago. I\'m making amends, because in March of this year the new album from Icarus Himself, Coffins, will likely be dropping in Madison. I was able to get my filthy hands on an advance rough prior to Icarus Himself\'s next show on January 24 at Cafe Montmartre with the new project from Jeremiah Nelson (a.k.a. Patchwork) called Jeremiah Nelson and the Mysterious Bruises. (Dane101 is co-sponsoring this show).
Icarus Himself is the solo venture of National Beekeepers Society?s Nick Whetro. With this project Whetro takes the refined distortion of the National Beekeepers and combines it with his wry and quirky vocals to make what I can only categorize as basement tape beauty.

While watching my Sunday morning news programs, it occurred to me that, instead of dick jokes popping into my head, I should be brainstorming inventive, well thought out ideas like Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell\'s (R-KY) suggestion of having the Economic Stimulus Package bill introduced on-line for all to review.
Why didn\'t I think of it before? Let\'s actually get the information back to the citizens that these bills affect. Let\'s stop thinking about dick jokes and start thinking about getting, not just one bill, but ALL bills online BEFORE they\'re voted on. My cynicism questions whether the powers that be would really want us regular folks getting in the way of their democracy. But still, realism shouldn\'t trump a good idea.

As a Madisonian that enjoys so much of what this city\'s various music venues, bars, and restaurants have to offer it was a difficult decision to figure out where to be as the New Year crept across the Atlantic to our landlocked state. Should I go to one of the rock shows at the Frequency or the High Noon? Do I head over to the Majestic and ring in the New Year as I did last year with the always festive Mama Diggdown\'s Brass Band? Disco funk with V05 at Montmartre? Would I hit the Old Fashioned and try to convince them I was worthy enough to be in the \"Big Shot\" club and get locked in at 9:30 p.m.? Or do I end up at Mickey\'s where most of the dane101 contributors were planning on ending up to see the Shabelles provide their pop soundtrack as we welcomed 2009?
I ended up doing what any self-respecting and indecisive Madisonian would do...as much of the above as humanly possible.

Better yet, you can pretty much make all the adjustments you want with gloves on -- a vital feature in this climate. On New Year\'s Day today, it was in the mid-twenties (F) but felt much colder on account of the windchill. I\'ve always been willing to sacrifice my fingers for a good photograph, but my fingers thank the D90 for no longer having to make the choice. For example, I was able to turn on the Live View with one touch of a gloved finger. (I don\'t actually use Live View very much, as the focus sucks -- but I thought it would look good in the photo.)Why do I think the glove thing matters? Because of sub-zero-windchill pictures like this.

Courtside Blog vs. Illinois is live from Champaign

We have also listed a couple events that dane101 isn\'t presenting, but receive our seal of approval. Dane101, reshaping your Madison reality.
January 3: Brew and View: Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas at the Majestic Theatre. Doors at 8:30 p.m.
Dane101 and the Majestic Theatre help you ease into the new year with a special screening of Hunter S. Thompson\'s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. The Terry Gilliam directed and Benicio del Toro and Johnny Depp starring film follows the adventures of Dr. Gonzo and his attorney side kick Raoul Duke. We will be serving up this dish of Gonzo journalism with a special rate for Singapore Slings (side of Mezcal optional).

He held his press conference right here in Madison on Monroe Street -- in the doorway of Paragon Video & Stereo, known as a soapbox for celebrities to sound off and air their grievances. Why now? \"I couldn\'t stand it anymore. People are just too rotten,\" he said. \"I just couldn\'t face the futility of going on for another year and nothing changing.\"Journalists from around the world crowded in front of the store and asked him to clarify his sudden new year\'s Eve announcement.\"I\'ve been doing this forever, and it hasn\'t done any good,\" he said more in sorrow than anger. \"Year after year, I promise to bring toys to children who say they\'ll be good. I thought it was helping make the world a better place, but for all I can see, it just stimulated a corrupt, debt-ridden consumer culture that now has collapsed of its own weight. \"But that\'s not all,\" said the weary holiday magician. \"Worst of all, year after year, the kids say they\'ll be good. Then they grow up, and year after year, they kill each other. Afghanistan, Iraq -- and now Gaza. That\'s the last straw. I mean, what\'s the point? I\'ve had it. Mrs. Claus and I are going to move to Hawaii and we\'re going to put the sleigh up for sale on eBay.\"Was this his final decision? Any chance he would reconsider and change his mind? What if people learn their lesson? What if peace breaks out?\"Fat chance!\" he said before realizing this sounded too harsh for an icon like him. \"I suppose there\'s always hope. Never say never, and all that... Maybe if the world stops fighting and people become less greedy, then yes, I might reconsider. But I\'m not sure what that would accomplish. After all, look at what happened when Brett Favre un-retired.\"Maybe people should think about celebrating Festivus instead.\"

Badger hockey rings in New Year with special events
