They were taken recently near Umstead State Park by a woman with a wildlife background who has worked as a national park ranger. She was walking her dog at dusk, camera in tow, when she spotted the coyote ahead of them. They ran to catch up with the animal, and when it paused for a moment she managed to capture these shots:The photographer, who does not wish to be identified, says she\'s been seeing what she believes is the same animal for years, though at first she mistook it for a fox. She writes:Last spring, we startled it in brush, then it came out into open 15\' feet from us (me and dog), just stood there and stared us down. (You aren\'t supposed to stare at wild dogs/coyotes etc btw--it\'s a sign of aggression.) At first I was afraid it was rabid, but then decided it was too rational and actions too stable. So we moved forward. It stayed 15-20\' from us, then moved in a playful way, like it was trying to get my dog to play. It even laid down, the way cats do when they want something to play. I knew fox did that sort of thing but didn\'t know about coyotes did. Finally, we turned away--something you aren\'t supposed to do--and it followed us. Right out into the open. I didn\'t know if it wanted to play or mate with dog--or have him for dinner. I tried making noise, talking to it etc; it kept distance but wouldn\'t scare off. While I could see it had the markings of a coyote, I convinced myself it was a lonely stray dog or a coyote-hybrid because of its behavior.Last evening, while walking her dog in the same area, the photographer was approached by another woman walking a small dog who wanted to warn her about the \"coyote or wild dog\" that she said had chased them. The second woman said the animal had barked and refused to back off -- even when she threw rocks at it. She was terrified. After writing about my own sighting of a shy coyote in Umstead some years ago, I have heard from readers about other encounters in and around the park. One person reported being followed by a coyote while jogging along a trail, another commenter took this gorgeous photo of a coyote crossing a stream in the park, and another spotted a coyote while canoeing through the area. The photographer who I heard from this week now finds herself in a quandary: On the one hand, she\'s worried that this particular animal has lost its fear of humans and could possibly attack someone (or someone\'s dog). But on the other hand, she\'s also worried that making a big fuss over the sightings could result in a war being declared on all coyotes in the area -- even those who are minding their own business, not to mention filling a critical role in our ecosystem. In an effort to live peacefully with the coyotes in our midst, here are some common-sense tips on preventing conflicts from the Department of Environmental Conservation in New York, where the Eastern coyote is well-established:* Do not feed coyotes.* If you see a coyote, be aggressive in your behavior -- make loud noises, wave your arms, throw sticks and stones.* Do not allow pets to run free.* Do not feed pets outside.* Make any garbage inaccessible to coyotes and other animals.* Eliminate availability of bird seed. Coyotes are attracted to the concentration of birds and rodents that come to feeders. If you do feed birds, clean up waste seed and spillage.* Fencing your yard may deter coyotes. The fence should be tight to the ground, preferably extending six inches below ground level.* Remove brush and tall grass from around your property to reduce protective cover for coyotes.* Teach children to appreciate coyotes from a distance.* Regulated hunting and trapping increases the \"fear\" coyotes have towards people.* Ask your neighbors to follow these same steps. And keep in mind that running away from a coyote is behaving like prey. That can be very dangerous.

Barack Obama visits Raleigh

Presidential candidate Barack Obama held a town hall meeting at the fairgrounds last night in Raleigh, so I decided to get a press pass and cover it.

If we need a prescription filled, it\'s not to the Target at \"Midtown\" we go, but Target at \"North Hills.\")\"I\'m not sure there\'s a need for a new term,\" agreed Mike Regan, a real estate agent and former Raleigh City Council member, to the paper.New Raleigh takes issue with a line from Editor Matthew Eisley\'s \"welcome to Midtown\" column in the paper.\"So what, then, is this \'new identity\' that is so \'increasingly distinct?\',\" they ask. \"And distinct from what?\"To me it\'s not so much an issue that there is coverage for this particular area -- God knows that local reporting has taken a hit in recent years, so any progress in this direction is thankful -- but with the name. Let\'s call the area what 99.9 percent of the citizens refer to it as: North Hills. What is so wrong about that? This attention to Midtown(e)/North Hills does bring up the topic of the distinctiveness of Raleigh\'s neighborhoods. We all have preconceived notions about these various places. For me, they all center around Downtown Raleigh (mainly because I just lack the knowledge of the various superlatives of other \'hoods in town): Boylan Heights is full of progressive, funky, eclectic folks (who don\'t mind living close to the state prison); Five Points has young up-and-comers who appreciate rising land values and urban amenities nearby; Mordecai and Oakwood feature old homes and community feel; Hayes Barton is a hot-bed of Old Raleigh charm; and on and on.Some 18 months ago, I wrote that Raleigh should embrace the uniqueness of its various neighborhoods, even suggesting intra-neighborhood competitions, a la, Siena, Italy\'s Il Palio, to further enhance that sense of community. Competition \"between neighborhoods could create pride in community and in the city itself. If nothing else, perhaps it would allow people to come out of their homes and get to know their neighbors -- and then develop solidarity,\" I wrote. After all, because of Wake County School\'s redistricting, it\'s not like everyones\' kids in a neighborhood all go to the same school, so there\'s not that loyalty on which to latch. It\'s become up to the communities themselves to establish that loyalty. The City of Raleigh hopes to attempt something in that vein. September will once again be \"Celebrating Neighborhoods Month\" in the Capital City.\"The quality of life in our city depends upon the quality of our neighborhoods,\" says this release (PDF).\"The importance of our neighborhoods and participation of our citizenry has been further underscored by celebrating our neighborhoods during the month of September. Annually, the Mayor issues a proclamation designating September as \'Neighborhoods Month.\' The city took the leadership [and] instituted an annual Neighborhood Exchange.\"The release goes on to mention that in the future, it is \"our desire to recognize neighborhoods for involvement and accomplishments.\"This year\'s Neighborhood Exchange will occur on September 19 & 20 at the Raleigh Convention Center.\"In addition, we would like to have outdoor activities on a separate weekend celebrating individual neighborhoods. These outdoor activities could consist of a parade, tours of neighborhoods and a closing picnic or the hosting of a picnic in individual neighborhoods for those touring that particular community.\"Those are the kinds of things that celebrate the distinctiveness of our neighborhoods -- no matter what we call them. What is it you like (or love) about your neighborhood? Can you only imagine yourself living in one particular \'hood?

NCSU song choices leave a lot to be desired

Apparently, N.C. State thinks it\'s important to have a third-quarter song for the fans to \"embrace\" and sing along with. It\'s even been put to a vote. Hmm.Needless to say, this has been viewed with skepticism and mocking. James Curle, Society contributor and head honcho over at Yet Another N.C. State Sport Blog, pontificated nicely on this attempt at a \"new\" tradition.\"I had hoped one song would jump off the page to me as something I could say, \'YEAH! That\'s IT!\' But no such luck, and I suspect the same for just about everyone else out there (except, I guess for the folks who nominated these),\" James wrote. \"In other words, I could see almost all of these songs making it into the 100.7 The River rotation, and that\'s not good.\"James was nice enough to give me a forum on this topic, so here it is.I absolutely love my alma mater, but sometimes it appears that N.C. State University just throws things together without really thinking them through just because someone thought it would be a good idea. The result can be a lame, half-hearted attempt at a ?new? tradition that dies a quick, yet still somehow painful, death. ...The newest ?new? tradition proposed is to have a sing-along song for the time between the third and fourth quarters. (Apparently this is very important; ample tailgating time is not.) ...But why force a ?new? tradition on us? After all, the best traditions are those that just sort of happen. ...Click on the above link to see my choices for \"stadium songs,\" for what they\'re worth. He held the position for the past seven years, serving as an outspoken and effective advocate for the river. He was also the force behind the founding of Muddy Water Watch, a statewide initiative that\'s involving citizens in monitoring sediment pollution. But as Naujoks noted in his resignation letter, big challenges remain for the Neuse and other North Carolina waterways:The Neuse River Basin is one of the fastest growing river basins in the nation. Increasing population growth combined with poor land use practices will continue to degrade our water resources. Local governments need to implement strong stormwater programs and strictly enforce sedimentation pollution control laws to control runoff from construction activity. As we have seen with recent droughts, our drinking water supplies will continue to be strained due to global climate change and unsustainable development practices that fail to link projected population growth to available water supplies. We need local governments to understand there are limits to growth and avoid short-sighted solutions like inter-basin water transfers or restricting flows to the river and downstream communities. Many of the solutions to deal with these problems already exist, but we need our elected officials to recognize the environmental and economic value of clean water rather than cave into industry lobbyists who profit from compromising our public trust waters. The Neuse River Foundation is now looking for someone to fill the position; click here for a job description.

City of Raleigh Uninterested in Healthy Lawns

Residents desiring a healthy, drought-resistant lawn that requires less herbicide application are out of luck. State grad (and English major!) who won the gold medal at the Beijing Olympics in the 400M freestyle relay. (And in doing so, the Americans delivered some well-deserved crow to the French swimmers. Zut alors!)Jones is just the second black swimmer to win gold at the Olympics in swimming, and the first African American. (Click here for video.) But he has his sights on a larger goal: keeping the United States\' minority populations from drowning. Jones knows all too well about the stat that blacks and Hispanics are much more likely than whites to drown, and he wants to change that. In fact, as a child, Jones himself almost drowned.\"Jones has sought to use his swimming prominence to make an impact through the USA Swimming Foundation\'s \'Make A Splash\' water safety program,\" said the N&O. ...\"A University of Memphis study sponsored by the USA Swimming Foundation found that in ethnically diverse communities, the youth drowning rate was more than double the national average and that almost six out of 10 African-American and Hispanic or Latino children can\'t swim -- nearly twice as many as white children. USA Swimming measured its own membership in 2002 and found that blacks accounted for less than 2 percent.\"Christina Mial of Raleigh was working to shift the balance a little Monday by helping her niece, Zakiah Haley, 4, and nephew, Keshon Kornegay, 8, learn to swim at the Chavis Park pool. Her boyfriend, Clarence McDade of Raleigh, sat patiently nearby, watching them.\" \'I tried to tell him to get into the water awhile ago, and he was like, No,\' Mial said.\" \'You won\'t ever catch me gettin\' in that water,\' said McDade, who explained that he has been afraid of it since his brother almost drowned several years ago. ...\"The USA Swimming study found that pool availability, access and safety were among the factors affecting minority participation. ...\" \'Swimming always gets a boost every four years,\' [NCSU swimming coach Brooks] Teal said, \'but for Cullen, an African-American young man with all the great qualities that he has ... there are bound to be children out there that he\'s reaching, whether they\'re just realizing that, hey, the water\'s nothing to be afraid of, or that swimming can be fun, or maybe competitive swimming is an avenue that they could pursue.\'\"

Who knew ...?

... that an artist from Raleigh (some 130 miles from the beach, according to Google Maps) would be a world-reknowned surfboard artist? \"Clark Hipolito is an artist and a surfer, so it only makes sense to combine the two,\" says WRAL.com.\" \'I think fine art on surfboards is a whole new thing. (And, let\'s face it, the RailHawks aren\'t on TV much -- and they probably shouldn\'t be if they keep this up.)The most anticipated match of the weekend \"fixtures\" (soccer term) is most likely Chelsea vs. Portsmouth. The Blues are the early favorites to win the EPL, while Portsmouth may make a run at the \"Big Four\" of Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United. Most of us will not be making the trek to England for the games, unless you have lots of money, connections and a lack of concern about the dollar versus the euro (which is, thankfully, starting to be more favorable to us Yanks). So that leaves us with the options of getting a couple of games a week on Fox Soccer Channel (my normal option), or you can head out to a number of local watering holes that have made it a point to show the EPL thanks to Setanta or the satellite channels. In Raleigh, I know that Tir Na nOg and Hibernian (also in Cary) have advertised the fact that they proudly show the Premiership games. State University parted ways some 18 years ago (has it really been 18 years?!), it was not on the best of terms, to put it mildly. To those watching from the sidelines, it appeared that the university turned its back on the basketball coach and athletics director, choosing instead to give the public the impression that Coach V was guilty of something. (If he was guilty of anything, it was of not having better control of his players. That\'s not good, but it inevitably wasn\'t worth losing his job over.)Fortunately, Valvano and the university appeared to have reconciled in the months before he passed away because of metastatic bone cancer in 1993. Wolfpack coaches and alums of all sports have taken part in the V Foundation\'s charity golf tournaments in the years since. In fact, the foundation has raised more than $70 million and has donated $15 million for cancer research grants in its 15 years of existence.WRAL states that now N.C. State will benefit directly from the foundation.\"Through a lot of hard work from people at N.C. State, they came up with an idea that would help us help them,\" V Foundation (and Jimmy V\'s brother) Nick Valvano said. The foundation gave a $1 million grant to the university for a program that is unlike any other.
