Question: Why should I create additional categories for people I add to my network?
Answer: We know that you want to share different information with different people so we've set up a system that by default lets you pick between 3 categories to determine who can view what you publish. Categories are an important part of the system we developed to help you manage who is able to see the different message posts you publish or who can see different sections of your member profile. You can create as many categories as you want and sort and view information posted by people in your network based on the categories you create.
We realize that not everyone in your network will fit nicely into your world as a Neighbor, Friend or Family. Go to the People page and click on the 'add' and 'edit' links next to the 'My Directory' link to add or delete categories, or to change the name of any categories you already created. Creating additional categories allows you to publish message posts or share your member profile in different ways. For example, lets say you have 10 people categorized and appearing in your Neighbors directory and 5 people in your Friends directory. You're going away on a vacation and you want to post a message about your upcoming travel plans that includes contact information and a request to keep an eye out on your house. You want your five closest neighbors that live across the street and next to you to view the post but not the rest of the people in your 'Neighbors' Directory. You also want 3 people in your Friends Directory to view the post in case they need to reach you. Creating a new category that you might call 'House Watch', adding your five neighbors and 3 friends to that category or directory lets you publish the post so that only those people can view it. Every time you go away and want to post a similar message you simply choose the 'House Watch' directory when you publish your message.
You can create directories and categories for any groups of people that you share information with, whether it is a neighborhood watch group, anyone who has children the same age as your kids or any other topic of common interest that you share with a sub-set of people in your directory.
